Bonding Q & A

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a versatile cosmetic procedure that Dr. Roytberg uses to improve the appearance of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Tooth stains
  • Discoloration
  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Teeth that are too small
  • Decay

When Dr. Roytberg performs a bonding procedure, he applies a tooth-colored composite resin — which is a type of plastic — to repair a tooth. It’s very simple and requires just one in-office visit, unlike more complex restorations like veneers. Dr. Roytberg bonds the resin with a special dental adhesive to your tooth.

How does a bonding procedure work?

First, Dr. Roytberg uses special dental instruments to slightly roughen the surface of your tooth. This allows him to apply a light coating of conditioning liquid that helps the resin materials bond to your tooth.

Once he finishes preparing your tooth, he carefully molds the putty-like resin material and smooths it into the proper shape. Then, he hardens the material with the use of a special light.

Once it hardens, he makes last-minute trims and adjustments to finalize the shape of the bonded material. Next, he polishes the material so that the surface resembles the surface of one of your natural teeth.

A bonding procedure on a single tooth typically takes Dr. Roytberg about 30 minutes to complete. If you're having more than one tooth worked on, you should expect a longer appointment or plan to come in for several visits.

What are the benefits of bonding?

With a bonding procedure, you can restore and improve the appearance of cosmetic smile concerns without complex oral surgery and multiple office visits. Dr. Roytberg knows you’re busy, and when it comes to enhancing smiles, he’s sensitive to working around your schedule. He can repair damaged teeth in one simple in-office bonding procedure and deliver truly amazing results.

Bonding is such an easy procedure that it generally doesn’t even require anesthesia of any kind. Also, bonding is far less expensive than alternative cosmetic procedures, such as veneers, which is what makes it such a popular choice among patients.
